Unearthed bathhouse reveals a thriving Roman Nijmegen: 'The Romans did not regard this city as a backwater'

Roman Bathhouse Discovery Highlights Nijmegen's Historical Significance

A significant archaeological find in Nijmegen-West has unveiled extensive remnants of a Roman bathhouse, marking it as the most substantial complex from the Roman era in the Netherlands. This discovery adds a new chapter to the understanding of the city's historical importance. Radboud researcher Stephan Mols, a regular presence at the excavation site, emphasized the implications of these findings.

"The new finds show that the Romans did not regard this city as a backwater,"
Mols stated, pointing out that the scale and grandeur of the structures exceeded previous estimates. This revelation challenges longstanding perceptions about Nijmegen's role during Roman times, suggesting it was a vibrant urban center rather than an overlooked settlement.
