TVK Allots Lone Tamil Nadu Rajya Sabha Seat To Congress, Strengthening Alliance Ties

Congress Gains Ground in Tamil Nadu with Rajya Sabha Seat Allocation

The Congress party has secured a Rajya Sabha seat through its alliance with the Tamil Nadu-based TVK, bringing its total representation in the state to two ministers and two MPs. This development signals a positive shift for a party that has faced electoral challenges in Tamil Nadu in recent years. The TVK, boasting 107 MLAs and a solid backing from its coalition partners, is well-positioned to secure the seat independently.

Although the TVK could have pursued its first Rajya Sabha seat through a bypoll, party leader Vijay opted to prioritize alliance unity and bolster support for Congress. The upcoming bypoll follows the resignation of AIADMK's C. V. Shanmugam, who vacated the seat after his recent assembly election victory in Mailam. Key dates for the nomination process include scrutiny on June 9, withdrawal by June 11, and polling set for June 18.

Political analysts suggest that Vijay's choice may be aimed at fortifying the alliance in opposition to the DMK. Ramu Manivannan, a political analyst, noted, “While the Congress wants to further expand its political landscape in Tamil Nadu, TVK would reward the Congress for the support.” Sources within Congress indicate that Praveen Chakravarty, chairperson of the All India Professionals’ Congress, is likely to be the candidate, though no official announcement has been made yet.

Girish Chodankar, Congress Tamil Nadu in-charge, expressed the party's intention to enhance its presence in the Rajya Sabha, stating, “We want to further strengthen our Rajya Sabha tally, and so we requested the Chief Minister that this Rajya Sabha seat be allocated to the Congress party.” Chakravarty has been a proponent of the Congress-TVK alliance, having previously met with Vijay ahead of the assembly elections.
