‘The Dhillon experiment’: What new Punjab BJP chief’s appointment signals for party ahead of 2027 polls

The Political Landscape Shifts: Dhillon Takes the Helm of Punjab BJP

The recent appointment of Kewal Singh Dhillon as the new Punjab BJP chief has sparked significant discussion among political analysts. Dr. Kanwalpreet Kaur from DAV College in Chandigarh highlights Dhillon's strategic fit within the party's framework: he is a Sikh, a Jat, and hails from the influential Malwa region, all critical factors in Punjab's political landscape. However, Kaur points out that despite his connections and wealth, Dhillon has never been seen as a dominant political force, even during his tenure with the Congress.

Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, the Punjab Congress chief, criticized the BJP's reliance on leaders from outside its ranks, stating that the party is “daydreaming” about power without credible homegrown leadership. He remarked,

The party that is ‘DAYDREAMING’ about forming the government in Punjab cannot find anyone worthy from its own stable to lead the state.

Congress MP Manish Tewari echoed Warring's sentiments, mocking the BJP for its choice to select former Congress members for key positions. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also weighed in, ridiculing Dhillon’s appointment, noting his past electoral failures and expressing sympathy for other former Congress leaders now in the BJP fold.

Analyzing the “Dhillon Experiment”

Prof. Harjeshwar Singh from SGGS College argues that Dhillon embodies a political style rooted in factionalism and patronage, which many voters in Punjab have grown weary of. He stated,

This is the very political stock the BJP has imported in bulk after its split with the Shiromani Akali Dal.
Singh suggests that the BJP's strategy is backfiring, as it appears to be regressing to traditional approaches by relying on influential Jat Sikh figures instead of fostering a new political identity.

Despite the skepticism, BJP officials have expressed optimism about Dhillon's leadership potential. Union Minister Ravneet Bittu and BJP MLA Ashwani Sharma extended their congratulations, indicating a belief that his appointment could benefit the party as it gears up for the 2027 elections. Analysts note that Dhillon's background aligns with the party's need for representation among Sikhs in Punjab, which may serve as a tactical move to regain ground lost to rival parties.

Dhillon's Political Journey and Business Legacy

Dhillon’s political trajectory has been closely tied to the Congress, where he initially emerged as a financier and organizer rather than a grassroots leader. While he secured a couple of terms as an MLA in Barnala, his influence has waned, particularly with the rise of the Aam Aadmi Party. His last significant political defeat came when he was denied a ticket for the 2022 elections, leading to his exit from the Congress and eventual joining of the BJP.

Born in Tallewal, Dhillon built a business empire starting with the establishment of Dhillon Brothers in 1979. He played a crucial role in bringing PepsiCo to India, and his ventures included Chandigarh's first mall-format entertainment complex. However, his business dealings have not been without controversy, facing regulatory scrutiny and legal battles that have tarnished his public image.

While Dhillon’s wealth is notable—declaring assets exceeding Rs 212 crore in 2022—his political effectiveness remains in question as the BJP attempts to redefine its strategy in Punjab. Observers are keenly watching whether the “Dhillon experiment” will yield the results the party hopes for, or if it will merely reinforce existing perceptions of the BJP's struggles in the state.
