Tata Motors Dives into Bold Color Choices to Attract Buyers
Tata Motors is shaking things up in the automotive world with its vibrant color palette. Currently, over 30,000 Sierras are cruising on Indian roads, with 5 percent flaunting the eye-catching Andaman Adventure yellow and more than 10 percent in the striking Bengal Rogue red. As Srivatsa pointed out, these standout shades were integral during their IPL launch campaign. While traditionally, bold hues like yellow and red contribute minimal sales percentages, the landscape is shifting. “The Indian car buyer wants to stand out now, that is why they are choosing these bright colours,” he emphasized.
Interestingly, the trend isn't just about vivid colors; dark hues are also seeing a surge, especially in luxury vehicles. Tata's '#Dark' line, featuring sleek black finishes, has captured market attention. “In the Sierra, one of our most popular colours, which accounts for 27 percent of sales, is ‘Munnar Mist,’” Srivatsa noted, describing a dark green that cleverly shifts shades in sunlight.
In the luxury segment, preferences are evolving as well. Balbir Singh Dhillon, Country Head of Audi India, mentioned that while classic colors like blue, white, black, and grey remain popular, there's a noticeable shift toward more expressive shades that showcase individuality. For high-performance models like the S5 and RS5, reds and greens are gaining traction. Yet, when it comes to vehicles priced over a crore, practicality reigns. “Neutral colours like white, black and grey are considered safer choices and have a higher resale value,” Dhillon explained, while also noting the appeal of the ‘sleeper aesthetic’—vehicles that offer top performance without flashy exteriors.
With advancements in paint technology, customization options are expanding, allowing consumers to tailor their vehicles directly from the manufacturer. Last year in Munich, I witnessed this firsthand at Mercedes-Benz's 'Manufaktur' outlet, where buyers can select from a plethora of choices for exterior colors, interior materials, and even stitching. It's a new era for car buyers, where personal style meets automotive excellence.
