Shivakumar Takes Oath as Karnataka Chief Minister Amid Siddaramaiah's Influence

In a symbolic gesture, Shivakumar took his oath as Karnataka's Chief Minister while holding the Constitution and invoking his spiritual mentor, Veera Gangadhara Ajjaya. His swearing-in comes as he assembles a 13-member Cabinet that reflects the significant influence of Siddaramaiah, even as the latter steps back from the chief ministerial role.

Among the cabinet members is Siddaramaiah's son, Yathindra, who has been given a ministerial position, further emphasizing the former chief minister's enduring presence in state politics. The initial Cabinet lineup indicates a preference for senior party members, aimed at ensuring a seamless transition of power. Shivakumar's sole deputy will be Parameshwara, a veteran leader from the Scheduled Caste community, appointed after Siddaramaiah advocated for him, promoting the narrative of a ‘Dalit CM’.

The new cabinet includes notable figures such as K.J. George, U.T. Khader, K.H. Muniyappa, and Ramalinga Reddy, many of whom are recognized as Siddaramaiah loyalists. Their appointments signal that the 77-year-old remains a key player in Karnataka politics, despite his recent loss of the chief ministership. Yathindra's inclusion serves to placate Siddaramaiah, who had previously sought to retain control over the party's direction.

Notably, the Cabinet lacks female representation, a point that has drawn criticism. The Congress party's strategy mirrors its previous approach when Siddaramaiah was sworn in, aiming to reflect a mix of caste groups and regional representation. Analysts express concern that the concentration of Siddaramaiah's supporters in Shivakumar's administration may lead to competing power dynamics, potentially challenging the new CM's authority as he navigates his leadership in Karnataka.
