Jan Suraaj Eyes Bankipur Bypoll Following BJP Exit
The Election Commission has yet to set a date for the upcoming Bankipur bypoll, but the stakes are high.
“We have decided that Bankipur majbooti se ladenge,”Uday Singh declared, highlighting the party's commitment to this crucial seat. Singh emphasized that Prashant Kishor, the party's leading candidate, is their strongest option. Historically a BJP stronghold, the party aims to present its best foot forward.
Prashant Kishor unveiled his Jan Suraaj Party on October 2, 2024, after a two-year journey across Bihar known as the Jan Suraaj Padyatra, which he initiated following his departure from political consulting in 2021. Although his party contested 238 out of 243 seats in the previous assembly elections, it failed to secure any wins, garnering just 3.4% of the votes.
The Bankipur constituency is noteworthy, having been recently held by BJP’s Nabin, who won against Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Rekha Kumari by over 51,000 votes. Nabin's family has a legacy in this seat, with his father, Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, also being a multiple-time winner. Singh mentioned that Kishor's candidacy is a hot topic among party members, who believe it would be the best move for the bypoll.
“Naturally, whenever this issue comes up for discussion during our meetings, the first reaction of party workers and supporters is that ‘PK ladenge toh sabse achchha hoga’,”Singh noted, adding that the decision will ultimately depend on local dynamics.
After a disappointing performance in the 2025 elections, Jan Suraaj dissolved its organizational units from the grassroots up. In a press conference last November, Kishor addressed why he did not run:
“Imran Khan started his party in Pakistan 25 years ago, contested from seven seats and lost all—so contesting elections is subjective,”he stated. Kishor has consistently maintained that his party's future hinges on either achieving significant victories or facing total defeat, declaring it would either be on “arsh” or “farsh.”
