Possible Shift in Karnataka Leadership as Shivakumar Eyes CM Role
Speculation is growing in Karnataka over a potential leadership change, with Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar poised to succeed Siddaramaiah as Chief Minister. This comes after a lengthy meeting between Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, at the party's headquarters in New Delhi. While discussions are ongoing, the specifics surrounding Siddaramaiah's departure remain unsettled.
At 77, Siddaramaiah has been linked to a national role, although he has expressed a desire to remain active in state politics. Shivakumar, who has persistently urged the Congress high command to fulfill its promise of transitioning leadership, exited the meeting with a smile but refrained from making any statements. His thumbs-up gesture while avoiding media questions was interpreted positively by observers.
If Shivakumar's elevation to Chief Minister occurs, it could trigger a long-awaited Cabinet reshuffle. Currently juggling multiple responsibilities, he leads the state Congress while also overseeing Bengaluru development and irrigation. The anticipated changes may also stir up demands for key portfolios from Siddaramaiah's supporters, with many Congress members traveling to Delhi in search of influential positions.
Political Tensions and Future Uncertainty
The leadership question has been a recurring theme since Congress claimed victory in the May 2023 elections, creating a tense atmosphere within the party's state unit. Although the high command initially resolved the leadership deadlock by announcing a power-sharing agreement, ongoing statements from both factions have only intensified the political drama.
On Tuesday, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar flew to Delhi separately, with Siddaramaiah accompanied by several senior Congress leaders. In contrast, Shivakumar opted for a commercial flight, with his vocal supporters choosing to remain silent in Bengaluru. After their discussions, Siddaramaiah visited Energy Minister K.J. George's residence, while Shivakumar returned home, evading media inquiries and specifically requesting privacy.
Potential Compromises and Criticism
As discussions about leadership continue, some insiders report that Siddaramaiah is hesitant to relinquish his position, citing his unique representation of the OBC community in Congress. Others have floated various compromises, including a larger allocation of Cabinet portfolios for Shivakumar or a Rajya Sabha seat for his brother, Suresh. Speculation also includes potential replacements such as G. Parameshwara or even Mallikarjun Kharge stepping in as Chief Minister.
Despite a commanding majority—135 out of 224 seats—Congress's governance has faced criticism for internal strife and a lack of reform. Political analysts have noted that the party's inability to manage its success has rendered the government "dysfunctional." As the opposition, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), capitalizes on the ruling party's infighting, they accuse the Congress of neglecting governance in favor of power struggles. "They came to power just to fight over the CM chair," remarked B.Y. Vijayendra, the BJP's state president, reflecting the growing frustrations among voters.
