New Research Unveils Health Disparities Among North Sea Porpoises
A groundbreaking international study has revealed that porpoises stranded in the Netherlands exhibit a lower average body mass index (BMI) compared to those found in Scotland and other regions. This research, spearheaded by Utrecht University in partnership with the Scottish Marine Animal Stranding Scheme (SMASS) at the University of Glasgow, marks a significant advancement in our understanding of porpoise health across the North Sea.
The study scrutinized the BMI of 1,700 porpoises that either stranded or were caught as bycatch in the North Sea over a span from 1990 to 2023. This extensive data compilation is unprecedented, offering vital insights into the health variations of this marine species across different countries.
