Digvijaya Singh Supports Calls for RSS Financial Transparency
In a recent statement, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh came out in support of Priyank Kharge's push for greater transparency regarding the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Kharge has emphasized that while he does not seek to prohibit the RSS, he advocates for accountability in its operations, especially given its significant influence on public life.
Singh, who previously served as Madhya Pradesh's chief minister, noted that his correspondence with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has aimed to address similar concerns. In a letter dated October 22, 2021, to Sitharaman, he requested a thorough inquiry into the RSS's registration, funding sources, and financial practices, arguing that the organization should adhere to the same transparency requirements as other trusts and political entities.
He pointed out that according to Nagpur-based RTI activist Mohnish Jabalpure, the RSS distributed over seven crore food packets and one crore ration kits during the COVID-19 pandemic, yet the organization has never clarified the origins of its funding for these initiatives. Singh’s concerns were echoed in a letter sent to Bhagwat on November 12, 2025, where he contested the RSS's claim to represent Hinduism, asserting that no single organization can claim to embody Sanatan Dharma.
“Today, Priyank Kharge has raised many of the same questions that I have been asking publicly for a long time,” Singh commented in a press note. He stressed that the issue is not a personal attack on any individual or group but rather a call for equality under the law and transparency. “In a democracy, no institution can be above questions and accountability,” he asserted, reiterating the need for the RSS to disclose its legal status, funding sources, and financial practices in line with democratic values.
