Congress Critiques Modi's Foreign Policy Amid US-Iran Agreement
Following Pakistan's announcement of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the United States and Iran aimed at easing Gulf tensions, Congress leaders have sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foreign policy. This development coincided with Modi's recent meeting with Donald Trump at the G7 Summit, where Trump lauded the strengthening ties between India and the US.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh pointed out that Pakistan's newfound role as a mediator in the US-Iran agreement has bolstered its geopolitical significance, especially when contrasted with the "international isolation" it experienced post-2008 Mumbai terror attacks. He stated,
“The truth is that it is being called the Islamabad MOU, which reflects Pakistan’s new regional status and global influence. This is the same Pakistan that Dr. Manmohan Singh isolated on the global stage after the November 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.”
Ramesh characterized the MOU as a major setback for Modi’s foreign policy, arguing that Pakistan has become more ingrained in the geopolitical landscape of West Asia—an issue that could have serious implications for India. He further labeled the agreement a "definitive defeat" for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and accused Modi of unwavering support for Israel amid increasing international scrutiny of its actions.
He continued,
“Only PM Modi remains steadfast in support of PM Netanyahu’s actions in the region—including in Lebanon, Gaza, and the occupied West Bank. This blind devotion of PM Modi to Israel is costing our country dearly.”Ramesh described the agreement as detrimental not only to the US but also to Israel, suggesting that the military campaign against Iran launched earlier this year has failed to meet its objectives.
He added,
“This MOU is a serious setback for the United States, which, in alliance with Israel, launched a war against Iran on February 28, 2026, targeting major objectives that were not achieved at all. The limitations of military power have once again been exposed.”Ramesh emphasized that Iran has emerged from the conflict with unexpected strategic advantages, and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations are reconsidering their diplomatic relationships following this development.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that Modi and Trump discussed various developments in West Asia during their meeting, with Modi praising Trump’s efforts to restore stability in the region. They also reviewed progress on various issues and instructed officials to accelerate negotiations for an interim bilateral trade agreement.
