CM Vijay chronicles TVK’s political journey in Tamil Nadu Assembly speech

Vijay Reflects on TVK’s Political Evolution During Assembly Address

In a recent address, Chief Minister Vijay dismissed critics and highlighted the extensive groundwork that has shaped his party's political landscape. He recalled pivotal moments, stating,

“In 2008, we organised protests in support of Sri Lankan Tamils. In 2009, through our people’s movement, we carried out various welfare schemes for the public. Through our films, we spoke about social justice and opposition to corruption.”
He also noted their backing of fishermen's rights and participation in the Jallikattu protests, demonstrating a consistent commitment to welfare initiatives.

Vijay articulated the principles guiding the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emphasizing a fusion of social reformers' ideals with a clear political vision.

“Periyar’s rejection of religious belief is not something we accepted, but we fully embraced his broader principles. We have always made it clear that we are not opposed to anyone’s ideology,”
he asserted. By aligning with the values of leaders like Dr. Ambedkar and Kamarajar, he asserted a commitment to equal opportunity and honest governance.

He elaborated on his unique approach to political engagement, stating,

“Most people start a political party first and then go to the people. We went to the people first and only then started our party.”
This strategy, he argued, led to significant electoral success, securing 35% of the vote in the 2026 elections, which translated to 17.2 million votes and established TVK as a formidable independent force.

Vijay characterized his administration as a representation of ordinary citizens, acknowledging the challenges faced along the way. He recalled a tragic incident in Karur, saying,

“In Karur, 41 people lost their lives, and the blame was placed on us. Is this how politics should be conducted?”
He concluded by drawing parallels between his government and those of past leaders, asserting that his governance remains deeply connected to the common people of Tamil Nadu.
