Chief Minister Mann Denies Controversial Video Allegations
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has vehemently denied allegations that he appears in a video allegedly showing him sprinkling alcohol on images of the ten Sikh Gurus and Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Responding to claims made by the Akal Takht, Mann asserted that the person in the footage does not match his physique and suggested the video is part of a calculated effort to tarnish his political standing. “This video was created to defame me and damage my reputation,” he stated, hinting that it may feature someone hired to impersonate him.
Mann expressed respect for the Akal Takht but criticized their leadership, claiming they are influenced by political figures like Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal. He has called for an investigation by Punjab’s Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, to uncover the video’s origins, stating,
“The truth must come out. Who got this video made? On whose instructions was it prepared?”
In an effort to counter the accusations against him, Mann highlighted various initiatives undertaken by his government that support Sikh interests, such as recognizing the martyrdom of Guru Gobind Singh's sons and implementing strong anti-sacrilege laws. He emphasized his commitment to Sikhism, declaring,
“I am a secular person and I respect all religions equally. But no one can question my commitment towards Sikhism.”
Political Fallout and Allegations
The controversy escalated as Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema presented findings from independent laboratories, asserting that the individual in the video was not Mann. These statements followed a resolution from the Akal Takht, which maintained that forensic examinations confirmed the video's authenticity and condemned Mann's alleged actions.
Sukhbir Singh Badal has ramped up his criticism, suggesting that Mann's shifting narrative raises significant doubts about his integrity. Badal recalled that Mann initially claimed the footage was AI-generated and welcomed any forensic examination. Despite this, Mann has since suggested that the person in the video is not him, raising further questions. Badal stated,
“The chief minister himself said that any laboratory could examine the video... He did not even have the courtesy to reply.”
As the situation unfolds, Badal emphasized the serious nature of the allegations, appealing for unity among political parties and Sikh organizations. He has called for Mann’s removal, warning of a potential protest if action is not taken within a month. “If Arvind Kejriwal does not act against Mann within one month, the Shiromani Akali Dal will launch a Dharam Yudh Morcha,” he declared, drawing historical parallels to past movements aimed at preserving the sanctity of Sikh institutions.
