Abhishek Banerjee Faces Backlash During Sonarpur Visit
During a visit to Sonarpur, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee claimed he was the target of a premeditated attack, stating,
“Look what they have done to me. There is no police in the area. They want to kill me. I will not leave this place till police send their force and offer protection to the victims’ families.”His remarks came as he met with relatives of a victim of post-poll violence.
Local residents, armed with broomsticks and bamboo poles, gathered outside the home of the TMC party worker, voicing their discontent with Banerjee's presence. One woman criticized his visit, stating,
“Why has he come here? The person whose house he has come to visit is also a thief. It is like a thief visiting another thief.”Another protester questioned his past actions, asking,
“Where was he when the Nirbhaya incident happened? How many times had he gone to meet the parents of Nirbhaya? We want an answer from him.”
BJP West Bengal president Samik Bhattacharya suggested that the community's anger reflected years of suffering, asserting,
“The BJP is not involved in such activities. What has happened is not expected in a democracy.”He emphasized the long-standing grievances against the TMC, recalling past incidents involving their party members and leaders.
In response to escalating tensions, a significant contingent of central forces, along with police from Sonarpur, arrived to restore order and ensure Banerjee's safe exit, according to a senior police official.
