Tata Shakes Up Car Colors to Attract Buyers

Tata Motors is making waves in the automotive market by introducing bold color options for its cars. According to Srivatsa, the company has successfully placed over 30,000 Sierras on the roads, with a notable 5% sporting the eye-catching Andaman Adventure yellow and over 10% in the striking Bengal Rogue red. These vibrant hues were prominently featured during the Indian Premier League, showcasing the brand's commitment to appealing to car buyers who want to stand out in a crowd. “The Indian car buyer wants to stand out now, that is why they are choosing these bright colours,” Srivatsa explained.

While bright colors are gaining traction, it's worth noting that sales of darker shades are also on the rise, especially in the premium vehicle segment. Tata’s '#Dark' line, which includes sleek black vehicles, has proven to be a hit among consumers. “Even in darker colours though, buyers aren’t just going black, they’re trying different shades,” Srivatsa noted, highlighting that 'Munnar Mist,' a dark green with a unique reflective quality, accounts for an impressive 27% of Sierra sales.

The luxury car market presents a different landscape when it comes to color preferences. Balbir Singh Dhillon, Country Head of Audi India, stated, “The choice of colour has always been integral to the car-buying process.” While traditional colors like blue, white, black, and grey continue to dominate sales, there's a noticeable shift towards more expressive colors that mirror personal style, particularly for high-performance models like the S5 and RS5.

However, for buyers investing over a crore, safety and resale value remain significant considerations. Dhillon remarked that neutral colors are often viewed as safer bets, and some buyers enjoy the 'sleeper aesthetic'—where a vehicle's performance exceeds its modest appearance. As automotive technology advances, customization options are becoming increasingly accessible. For instance, during a recent visit to Mercedes-Benz's exclusive 'Manufaktur' outlet in Munich, customers can select from a vast array of colors, materials, and finishes for top-tier models, reinforcing the trend towards personalization in the automotive industry.
