The Hidden World of Adult Whitebait Uncovered by New Study
Research led by Dr. Ben Crichton from the University of Canterbury's School of Biological Sciences has shed light on the often-overlooked adult stage of kōkopu, a type of whitebait that can thrive for over a decade. While whitebait generally refers to the juvenile forms of six freshwater fish species, the three kōkopu species have been largely ignored in scientific studies, unlike the more commonly examined īnanga, which dominate the whitebait harvest.
Characterized by their nocturnal behavior, territorial instincts, and competitive nature, these adult kōkopu are revealing a complex lifestyle that challenges previous assumptions about whitebait. This new research highlights the need for a deeper understanding of these fish, as they play a crucial role in freshwater ecosystems.
