VHP Defends Champat Rai Amid Ram Mandir Donation Controversy
The government of Uttar Pradesh has initiated a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe allegations of embezzlement related to donations for the Ram Mandir. The SIT's investigation has already commenced, with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) emphasizing the need to separate those genuinely at fault from mere negligence. The organization stated, “It would be inappropriate to cast aspersions on everyone at this stage,” and called for robust systems to oversee the Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir.
In light of the serious claims surrounding the funds contributed for the temple in Ayodhya, the VHP affirmed that the Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust is responsible for every single donation. They noted that as soon as these allegations surfaced, the trust itself requested the formation of the SIT. Champat Rai, the trust's general secretary and VHP vice-president, has agreed to cooperate fully with the investigation. “Whoever is found guilty—regardless of who they are—must be punished,” the VHP declared.
Support for Rai has poured in from VHP leaders, including national spokesperson Vijay Shankar Tiwari, who praised his lifelong dedication to the Ram Mandir movement. “Champat Rai Ji dedicated his entire life to the Ram Mandir movement,” he stated on X, asserting that no unfounded claims could tarnish Rai's reputation. Tiwari further expressed confidence in Rai's resilience against accusations, declaring, “The lifespan of a lie is very short. Truth alone triumphs.”
Internally, some VHP members have voiced dissatisfaction with how the situation has unfolded, suggesting that rumors attempting to discredit Rai are part of a larger agenda against the trust. “Dragging such senior functionaries who have worked throughout their lives for Ram Lalla is not acceptable,” remarked a senior member of the VHP. The organization has also called for a broader investigation into other trusts that have raised funds for the Ram Mandir, including the Ramalaya Trust.
The VHP has urged caution against what they describe as “malicious attempts” to politicize the investigation ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. They accused opposition parties like the Congress and Samajwadi Party of historically undermining the Ram Mandir initiative, stating, “Today, the very same people are demanding the formation of an all-party committee to conduct the investigation.” The VHP characterized this request as absurd, questioning the qualifications of political representatives to oversee a criminal investigation.
Swami Jitendranand Saraswati, General Secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Sant Samiti, weighed in, suggesting that the term “scam” was inappropriate. He described the situation as involving “certain irregularities and lapses” in donation handling, urging patience while the SIT completes its work. “No individual should be exempt from accountability,” he asserted, echoing a sentiment shared among many in the community.
