Modi Celebrates West Bengal Foundation Day Amid Partition Debate
On June 20, West Bengal marked its Foundation Day with Prime Minister Narendra Modi joining celebrations that stirred discussions surrounding the Partition. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari took to X, expressing the joy of the people in welcoming Modi to the state.
“On behalf of the people of West Bengal, I extend a hearty welcome to the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji on his visit to our vibrant State,”he wrote, highlighting the significance of the occasion as both 'Paschimbanga Dibos' and International Yoga Day.
Modi also extended his warm wishes to the people of West Bengal, acknowledging the state's profound contributions to India's cultural and historical landscape.
“Warm greetings to my sisters and brothers of West Bengal on the occasion of Paschimbanga Divas,”he stated, emphasizing the day’s importance in West Bengal's integration into India. He noted that June 20 resonates strongly with the state's political history.
This annual celebration commemorates the unique identity and legislative framework that led to West Bengal's formation, dating back to 1947. The day is rooted in the contentious events of that year when the Legislative Assembly convened to decide the province’s future amid the Mountbatten Plan. While some legislators initially voted for the entire province to join Pakistan, a subsequent vote favored partition, allowing the Hindu-majority districts to align with India.
Dr. Rup Kumar Barman, a history professor at Jadavpur University, elaborated on the pivotal June 20 vote. He explained that it represented a critical decision by non-Muslim-majority legislators, ultimately paving the way for the establishment of West Bengal. Supporters argue that the day highlights the aspirations of these districts during a tumultuous period.
Despite the BJP's efforts to celebrate, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has opposed the recognition of June 20, arguing that it is a painful reminder of the Partition's legacy. TMC leaders have advocated for more inclusive celebrations, favoring cultural milestones like Poila Baishakh. Keya Ghosh, a BJP leader, countered this stance, asserting the day’s historical relevance.
“June 20 will always hold special significance for the people of the state because it marks a crucial moment in the events that led to the creation of West Bengal,”she stated, underscoring the importance of remembering the state’s history.
As the debate continues, some within the BJP argue that acknowledging June 20 can help future generations understand the complexities of West Bengal's past. Amitava Roy, vice president of the West Bengal BJP, urged recognition of the day as a vital history lesson.
“We believe several important chapters of Bengal’s past have been overlooked, and celebrating the day will help people reconnect with that history,”he remarked, reinforcing the call for historical acknowledgment amidst the ongoing political discourse.
