Hydrogen-Powered Steelmaking: A Game-Changer with New Catalyst
Steel and metal manufacturing significantly contribute to global greenhouse gas emissions, responsible for about 10% of CO2 output worldwide. Despite this, these materials are essential for various modern applications, including transportation, energy, infrastructure, safety, and healthcare. Hydrogen-based metal production presents an exciting, CO2-neutral alternative that not only reduces emissions but also combines reduction, alloying, and microstructure design into one streamlined process.
Nevertheless, the transition to hydrogen-based production isn't without its hurdles. One major challenge is the sluggish reduction kinetics of metal ores at temperatures below 800°C (1,472°F), which hampers efficiency and scalability in real-world applications.
