Sunil Kanugolu Remains Chief Adviser to CM Amid Cabinet Challenges
Sunil Kanugolu has been confirmed as the chief adviser to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, despite ongoing difficulties within the cabinet. Previously, Kanugolu served in a limited capacity under former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, mainly providing input for reports without engaging in political strategy or policymaking.
While Kanugolu is a prominent figure within the All India Congress Committee (AICC), he is best known as a poll strategist, traveling across states to gather insights and assess public sentiment. Party insiders reveal that Congress prefers to maintain its decision-making in-house, resisting the trend of outsourcing strategic operations to external consultants. As one source noted,
“Our ideology and working style are very different from other parties.”
Formerly leading the BJP’s campaign organization, Kanugolu now heads Mindshare Analytics in Hyderabad. In 2023, he achieved notable recognition, receiving a “cabinet rank” in Karnataka, which provided him with various privileges. His strategic acumen was evident in the successful “40 percent commission government” campaign during the recent assembly elections. Following this, he played a crucial role in Congress's victory in Telangana.
Despite his influence, Kanugolu's interactions in Karnataka have been limited, primarily connecting with Siddaramaiah a few times to share insights on voter feedback. His advisory role in Shivakumar's cabinet is expected to mirror this previous arrangement. Kanugolu is viewed as a key ally of K.C. Venugopal, the AICC General Secretary (Organisation), serving as a conduit between him and state leaders.
Kanugolu operates with a small team of trusted aides and manages substantial operations across multiple states. However, he tends to keep a low profile, participating in meetings primarily when directed by the AICC. His preparation for ticket distribution meetings is thorough, often involving extensive discussions to scrutinize potential candidates. A source familiar with his methods stated,
“He questions every reason ascribed to all potential candidates in every constituency.”
