BJP's Annamalai Calls Out Modi Government on Language Policy Changes
K. Annamalai, the leader of the BJP in Tamil Nadu, has expressed his support for the concept of multilingual education but is critical of the Modi government's recent changes to the three-language formula. Initially announced in April 2026 by the CBSE, the plan required Class 6 students to learn three languages, with two being Indian. However, Annamalai pointed out that a subsequent notification on May 15, 2026, unexpectedly mandated the introduction of a third language for Class 9 students starting this academic year, contrary to the original timeline of 2029-30.
Annamalai highlighted the confusion this shift has caused among Tamil Nadu parents, who had already selected a language for their children in Class 6. He argued that introducing a new language for Class 9 students by July 1, 2026, puts unnecessary pressure on them, jeopardizing their learning outcomes. He urged the Ministry of Education to revert to the original plan that delayed the third language requirement until the 2029-30 academic year.
“Expecting a Class 9 student to learn a new language in a short time will only pressurize children and affect their overall learning outcomes,”he stated on social media.
The abrupt implementation of the three-language formula has raised alarms among parents, especially since many CBSE schools in Tamil Nadu predominantly teach Tamil and English, with a foreign language as the third option. Parents are concerned that the demand for two Indian languages will disrupt their children's academic progress, particularly with board examinations approaching. Legal actions have been initiated as families challenge the mid-session policy change in the Supreme Court.
In the wake of leadership changes within the Tamil Nadu BJP, where Nainar Nagendran has taken over as state president, Annamalai has distanced himself from active party operations and has been less visible in recent electoral campaigns. His criticisms reflect a growing discontent with the central government's approach to education policy in the state.
